Earlier today on my Facebook page, I posted about a sale Carina Press is having right now. (An awesome site-wide sale, mind you. You can get the code for it if you click through to my FB page.) As I was posting about it I thought, “Self, you know what you should do? You should make a side-loading tutorial. You get asked this a lot, after all.” And I replied, “You know what? I make an excellent point. I’m gonna make a side-loading tutorial.”
I’m gonna be using Calibre to do this. You don’t have to use Calibre, there’s other ways to side-load your e-reader, but, I don’t know. I really like Calibre in general and also I’m kinda an old lady when it comes to how I do shit. Sometimes I get stuck on one way and I hiss at the idea of doing it differently. I HAVE ISSUES. OKAY.
If you don’t already have it, you can download it here: http://calibre-ebook.com/
Still here? Haven’t gone searching for another tutorial yet? Got it downloaded and opened? Awesome. Onward!
STEP ONE: ADD YOUR BOOK.
This part is super easy, because you click the book icon with a plus sign on the cover.
It also has: “Add books” written underneath it, just in case there’s any confusion.
A wild drop-down menu appears! Click “Add books from a single directory.”
Find the book you bought and downloaded.
In this case, I’m adding my ARC of Everly After by Rebecca Paula.
You should get this thing. It says so in a charming red font on the below image.
THE IMAGES NEVER LIE.
You can get your own copy here or here.
Your book will be added to your library. See it? Right there? Highlighted?
Okay. Maybe this isn’t so much of a step. Whatever. There’s your book in your library MOVING ON.
STEP FIVE. MAYBE.:
Now, if you bought your book from, say, Carina Press’s site, there’s a chance you’ll have to convert it. If that’s the case, proceed. If it’s in the correct format for your e-reader already, skip to step seven.
Converters still with me? Awesome. Okay. So you’re now going to go over to “Convert books” on your taskbar. It’s two over from “Add books.” Can’t miss it. Looks like a book with some arrows on the cover? See it? Great. Now click that. From the drop down menu, hit “Convert individually.”
A CONVERSION PAGE APPEARS.
Now, under “Input format,” you’re not going to mess with anything. This is the format your book is already in. Over in “Output format,” however, we’re gonna have to change that depending on your e-reader. If you’re a Kindle user, you’re gonna want Mobi. Nook and iBooks is ePub. Everything else? Probably PDF. Not sure, to be honest. Google, if you’re unsure. Once you have your format selected, you’re gonna click “Ok” at the bottom of the screen.
Once your conversion is complete (you’ll know because in the bottom, right hand corner, it’ll say: Jobs: 0), hook up your e-reader!
You could have actually already done this, at any point, honestly, but whatever. I’m running this tutorial and I say we only just now hooked it up.
I couldn’t find my USB cord, okay?
Now, select your book, right-click it, hit “send to device” then “Send to main memory.”
See that “Jobs” thing in the right hand corner? That’s Calibre sending the book to your device.
Once Calibre has sent it, a check mark will appear next to the title. It’s kinda like a little thumbs up from Calibre saying, “Hey, dude. Got your back. Go get your read on.”
And you’re done! Unhook your device and get to reading, homie. You just side-loaded like a boss. Or an old lady. Maybe an old lady boss.
Any other questions? Something not clear enough? Want to tell me my face is really weird? Comment and I’ll try my best to address it!
